Choi Yuk-lin visits New York
Secretary for Education Choi Yuk-lin learnt about the latest education developments in the US city of New York where she toured a school and met education experts on May 31 and June 1.
Ms Choi visited Teachers College Community School on May 31 and met its principal Michelle Verdiner to ascertain the school's child-centred learning environment and how its participation in New York City's Algebra for All initiative prepares students to master algebraic concepts and skills by the end of eighth grade.
On the same day, she met members of the Forum for World Education Committee to discuss sustainable education development and the challenges and opportunities to be anticipated.
She also discussed issues related to primary and secondary mathematics education and mathematics teacher training with Associate Professor of the Department of Mathematics of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Yvonne Lai.
The education chief pointed out that the Education Bureau is stepping up the promotion of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics) education for all, for fun and for diversity in primary and secondary schools to build a solid foundation in relevant subjects for students.
The bureau also renews and enriches the school curriculum, enhances teacher training in innovation and technology (I&T) as well as learning and teaching resources and further nurtures students with potential in STEAM fields to cultivate future I&T talent, she added.
Ms Choi’s New York itinerary included meeting Hong Kong youngsters on June 1 to learn about their studies and career development in the US. She encouraged them to work hard at school and at work.
Additionally, she met former Vice President of the Manhattan School of Music Professor Marjorie Merryman, Professor of Accounting of New York University Stern School of Business Joshua Ronen and Professor of Marketing of New York University Stern School of Business.
They exchanged views on the latest developments in building Hong Kong into an international education hub and discussed the promotion of academic research and its impact in Hong Kong.
Ms Choi returned to Hong Kong today after concluding her visit to the US.
