The Leisure & Cultural Services Department (LCSD) today announced the establishment of an office to promote Chinese culture through programmes, exchanges and collaborations aimed at enhancing citizens’ cultural confidence and sense of national identity.
A kick-off ceremony for the Chinese Culture Promotion Office (CCPO) and related programmes was held at the Hong Kong Museum of Coastal Defence this morning.
Addressing the ceremony, Acting Secretary for Culture, Sports & Tourism Raistlin Lau said the newly established CCPO would take up the important role of promoting Chinese culture and patriotic education.
This will be done by using the LCSD’s resources to plan multifaceted activities relating to Chinese history and culture, he added.
The office will collaborate with Hong Kong Museum of History to launch the General History of China exhibition series. The “The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: The Ancient Civilisation of the Xia, Shang and Zhou Dynasties in Henan Province” will be the first exhibition in this series and will run from April 3 to July 8.
This exhibition will explore the origins of Chinese civilization via displays of important archaeological discoveries and artefacts from Henan that reflect the political, social, ritual and cultural lives of the three dynasties.
The museum will then stage exhibitions on historical relics from significant periods in chronological order, concluding in 2029 with an exhibition to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the establishment of the People’s Republic of China.
The CCPO will annually organise the Chinese Culture Festival, starting from this year, in addition to community engagement activities for the public to learn about Chinese culture through everyday objects.
It will also select talks and activities to live-stream through a designated website and social media platform. The contents of some of the talks, and educational resources from certain exhibitions, will be uploaded onto the website.
