Events must comply with laws: Govt

August 24, 2023

The Government today said that it has reminded the organiser of the Gay Games, due to be held in Hong Kong this November, to observe the city’s laws and regulations regardless of whether its events are held in private venues or not.

In a statement in response to media enquiries relating to the games, the Government stressed that Hong Kong is an international city, with many local, Mainland and overseas organisations hosting different events here.

It said organisers must comply with Hong Kong laws and regulations, regardless of whether their events are held in private venues, government venues or public spaces.

Noting that the Gay Games is to be hosted by a community organisation and that many of its events will be held in private venues, the Government said that all event applications submitted to it, including those involving government venues or public spaces, are handled in accordance with relevant laws and procedures.

It added that applicants must follow established regulations and procedures in submitting their applications to the corresponding departments, and that some events may require licences and permits.

The Government reiterated that departments process applications for the use of venues and public spaces in strict accordance with established procedures and criteria.

It highlighted that, depending on the details of an event, additional requirements such as crowd control and safety measures may be deemed necessary.

It added that all departments clearly stipulate and require compliance with the laws of Hong Kong, and the rules and conditions set by relevant departments, to ensure that events are conducted in a lawful, safe and orderly manner.
