Whale carcass to be buried
The Agriculture, Fisheries & Conservation Department announced that the whale carcass found in Sai Kung waters will be buried near High Island Reservoir West Dam tomorrow.
The department, together with experts from Ocean Park, the Ocean Park Conservation Foundation and City University, completed a dissection of the mammal, but analyses on tissue samples are still underway.
Departmental staff will enter the site tomorrow for further investigations and to start burial procedures, during which machines and chemicals will be used. As a result, the department advised the public not to approach and watch in case of any danger.
It further stressed that proper measures will be taken to ensure that the whole process is in line with hygiene and disinfection requirements, as well as environment protection principles.
After natural decay, the whale carcass will be sent to Ocean Park for research purposes. The department added that it hopes the whale carcass can be made into a specimen for education and conservation purposes.
