Chief Executive John Lee met the visiting Chairman of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region Erkin Tuniyaz today.
Mr Lee welcomed Mr Tuniyaz and his delegation to promote exchanges and co-operation between Hong Kong and Xinjiang on areas such as trade, culture and tourism and organise trade, cultural and tourism promotional events during the visit.
Citing Hong Kong and Xinjiang's frequent trade and economic exchanges as well as Xinjiang's rich historical and cultural background, the Chief Executive said he hoped the people-to-people bonds between the two places would be strengthened through cultural, arts and tourism activities.
"With the full resumption of normal travel with the Mainland and Hong Kong's reconnection to the world, it is the best time for Hong Kong to give full play to its dual roles in going global and attracting foreign investment.
“The Government will focus on pursuing economic development and strengthening competitiveness this year, promoting comprehensive economic, trade, cultural and tourism exchanges with the Mainland and other parts of the world.”
Mr Lee added that he believes Hong Kong and Xinjiang can enhance co-operation in various aspects to jointly promote development and achieve mutual benefits.
