2 Canto-opera films to be screened

The restored version of Butterfly & Red Pear Blossom will be shown at the Hong Kong Film Archive Cinema on November 26 and 27.
The Hong Kong Film Archive Cinema will screen two Cantonese opera films starring Yam Kim-fai and Chan Po-chu on November 26 and 27, the Leisure & Cultural Services Department announced today.
In the restored version of Butterfly & Red Pear Blossom (1959), a courtesan played by Pak Suet-sin and a scholar featuring Yam Kim-fai fall in love while exchanging poems.
The Story of Heroine Fan Lei-fa (1968) centres on the legend of the four ancient Chinese heroines. Chan Po-chu will wow audiences by taking up the female warrior role as the Tang dynasty general Fan Lei-fa.
Both films are in Cantonese. Butterfly & Red Pear Blossom is with Chinese and English subtitles while The Story of Heroine Fan Lei-fa is with Cantonese lyrics.
The noon screenings on November 26 and 27 are accompanied by post-screening talks to be conducted in Cantonese. Admission is free.
Tickets are now available at URBTIX. Call 2739 2139 for enquiries.
The film screenings serve as a way to mark the 20th anniversary of Cantonese Opera Day, which will be held on November 27 at the Cultural Centre and the Space Museum. Admission is free with tickets and relevant arrangements will be announced later.
