Baroque masterpieces to be shown

July 14, 2022

Italy’s Capodimonte Museum will feature 40 late Italian Renaissance works and Neapolitan Baroque masterpieces for the first time in Hong Kong.

Speaking at the show’s opening ceremony today, Secretary for Culture, Sports & Tourism Kevin Yeung lauded the Leisure & Cultural Services Department’s efforts in collaborating with world-class museums across the globe to bring top-notch exhibitions to the city over the years.

“If you recall the very well-received exhibition of the Uffizi collection of Italian Renaissance art in Hong Kong last time, I can assure you that this exhibition of Baroque art is equally unique and no less inspiring.”

The showcase includes mythology, still life and landscape paintings.

One of the exhibits, The Supper at Emmaus by Mattias Stomer, depicts the moment when two of Jesus’ followers recognised him after his resurrection at a dinner.

It is a typical example of Baroque art, which is characterised by the dramatic contrast of light and dark, as well as exaggerated facial expressions and movement.

The biblical characters wearing the clothes of commoners allow people to seek spiritual comfort.

The exhibition uses Baroque music and soundscapes for selected paintings to add a new dimension to art appreciation.

Three local artists Kingsley Ng, Chow Chun-fai and missquai also provide artistic responses, with various creative media from a Hong Kong perspective, to the works of the Baroque masters.

Part of the celebrations for the 25th Anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: The Road to the Baroque - Masterpieces from the Capodimonte Museum will run from July 15 to November 2 at the Museum of Art.

The standard admission fee is $10.
