Secretary for Innovation, Technology & Industry Prof Sun Dong visited Cyberport today to keep abreast of its latest developments and future direction.

Prof Sun toured the Smart Living Concept Store there and met entrepreneurs of smart living product startups to gain a better understanding of the challenges and opportunities they face.

He also inspected the IT Street and the CyberArena, a designated e-sports competition venue located at the arcade, and was briefed on Cyberport's work.

As Hong Kong's digital flagship, Cyberport is currently home to over 700 technology enterprises, startups and relevant enterprises and forms a diversified and vibrant information technology ecosystem. Six of its startups have reached unicorn status.

Noting that innovation-driven development is one of the current-term Government's priority policy areas, Prof Sun said the foundation of the real economy can be consolidated through proactively developing Hong Kong into an international innovation and technology (I&T) hub.

This can also expedite smart city development and promote a wider application of digital technologies, enabling the public to experience the benefits brought about by technologies in daily life, he emphasised.

“The Government has all along supported local I&T development and has been committed to nurturing more local young talent in science and technology, as well as attracting foreign talent, to enhance Hong Kong's competitiveness in scientific research.

“We must seize the opportunities of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area development and facilitate Hong Kong's integration into the overall development plan of the country,” he added.

Before concluding his visit, Prof Sun toured the Smart Government Innovation Lab to get an update on the latest work of the Office of the Government Chief Information Officer.

He also viewed some of the technologies in the lab which have been adopted or are being tested by bureaus and departments such as Guiding Robot, City Dashboard and the 4D Immersive CAVE System.
