Election concludes smoothly

December 20, 2021

The 2021 Legislative Council General Election has registered about 30% turnout rate for its geographical and functional constituencies and the turnout rate for the Election Committee constituency is close to 99%.

Meeting the media after the polls closed last night, Electoral Affairs Commission Chairman Barnabas Fung explained that the voting proceeded steadily as a result of implementing several improvements.

“The polling has gone smoothly, to a very large extent, because we have successfully launched and operated the Electronic Poll Register and I think the general opinion is that it has speeded up the issuing of ballot papers.

“As to the counting, we have also instituted a number of improvements. We have separated the process of counting the ballot papers from the reconciliation of different ballot paper accounts so that, say for example, the result of the Election Committee constituency has come out within about three to four hours, which was my estimate that I had given when I spoke on the radio on Saturday.”

A total of 1,350,680 people cast their votes in the geographical constituencies and the turnout rate is 30.20%. The corresponding figures for the functional constituencies are 70,490 and 32.22%.

The turnout rate for the Election Committee constituency is 98.48% with the voter turnout at 1,426.
