The Centre for Health Protection today expressed concern over a rise in COVID-19 infections linked to the Kwai Chung Container Terminal.

The centre’s Communicable Disease Branch Head Dr Chuang Shuk-kwan told reporters at a press briefing this afternoon that three more confirmed cases were recorded at the terminal.

Among all the cases involving the terminal, eight patients work for the same company.

She said: “Concerning the cases at the Kwai Chung Container Terminal, actually, cases are coming from more than one company, but (at) one of the companies, we noticed that there are quite a number of cases and the numbers are increasing.

“Of course, some of the cases (have been) detected through our distribution of (specimen bottles for collecting) saliva samples, but (there are) still others (who have) developed symptoms.

“I think the resting room may be one of the most risky areas that spread the infection.”

Dr Chuang added that about 120 staff, from the company with increasing COVID-19 cases, may have to be sent to quarantine centres.

There were 46 additional confirmed cases of COVID-19 reported today, of which 39 are locally transmitted. Twenty-seven of them are linked to other cases while 12 are those with unknown infection sources.

Additionally, the Hospital Authority reported that 779 confirmed COVID-19 patients are currently hospitalised and 3,488 confirmed and suspected patients have been discharged.
