Council for Sustainable Development Chairman Prof Arthur Li (right) launches a public engagement exercise on the Long-term Decarbonisation Strategy.

The Council for Sustainable Development today launched the public interaction phase of an engagement exercise on the Long-term Decarbonisation Strategy.

The engagement exercise aims to raise public awareness of the impact of carbon emissions and gauge community views on developing feasible carbon reduction strategies.

The council also plans to make recommendations to the Government by the end of this year.

Speaking at a press conference, the council’s Chairman Prof Arthur Li said climate change is an imminent global challenge.

“Mitigating climate change is not just for ourselves, but also for our children and future generations. Concerted efforts of the Government and civic society are required to promote and implement the decarbonisation strategy.”

People are welcome to take part in regional forums, a youth forum, school activities and briefing sessions to be held in the coming three months.

The council also released a Public Engagement Document to highlight three main topics for discussion, including transition towards a low-carbon society, reducing energy use and further decarbonising electricity generation, and low-carbon transport in a smart city.

Views collection forms are included in the document and can be sent to the Council Secretariat via email before September 20.

People can also send the forms by fax (3150 8168) or mail (46/F, Revenue Tower, 5 Gloucester Road, Wan Chai).
