Dev't Bureau saddened by helper death

August 21, 2018

The Development Bureau’s Tree Management Office and the Housing Department were saddened by a foreign domestic helper’s death after she was struck by a tree branch at Shun Lee Estate in Kwun Tong today.

They offered their deepest condolences to her family and employer.

The tree from which the branch fell from is a 15-metre high Ficus elastica with a diameter of about one metre.

The tree, about 40-years-old, is managed and maintained by the Housing Department.

The department will conduct a detailed investigation into the cause of the branch failure and submit a report to the Tree Management Office.

Preliminary investigation results are expected to be available in two weeks.

The department inspected the tree in June and had arranged for the contractor to carry out crown pruning and removal of dead branches by August 24.

The contractor started the pruning work this afternoon to reduce the risk of tree failure.

The condition of nearby trees was also checked today and necessary risk mitigation and preventive measures will be carried out.
