June 22, 2018

Secretary for Justice Teresa Cheng today launched Prosecution Week 2018, which features a range of activities to promote the rule of law and enhance public awareness of the criminal justice system of Hong Kong.

Ms Cheng said citizens, especially the younger generations, would gain a better understanding of and respect for the law and the legal consequences of unlawful conduct through a better public awareness of the criminal justice system.

“The public can know more about the work of the Prosecutions Division in the context of transparency through community engagement.

“This is ‘Meeting the Community’ Programme that the Prosecutions Division have been working on. They have taken a huge initiative and effort in promoting the rule of law by bringing the public closer to see how the criminal justice system operates.”

Director of Public Prosecutions David Leung said prosecutors must act in accordance with the law, adding their decisions are made on the highest professional standard that considers only the law, the evidence and the public interest.

Held for the seventh year, Prosecution Week 2018 will run until June 29.

Activities including visits to the courts and mock trials will also be arranged.
