CE congratulates HK athletes
Chief Executive John Lee today congratulated Hong Kong, China athletes on their achievements at the 5th Asian Para Games, commending their outstanding performance and noble sportsmanship.
Mr Lee said the Hong Kong, China delegation delivered an excellent performance at this year's Asian Para Games, winning a total of 41 medals, comprising 3 gold, 14 silver and 24 bronze medals, and achieving Hong Kong's best-ever result in boccia with a total of 2 gold, 3 silver, and 3 bronze medals.
He said these heartening achievements write a splendid chapter in the development of para sports in Hong Kong.
"Hong Kong, China athletes gave their utmost in the competition, demonstrating superb skills and indomitable determination. Their achievements have not only brought honour to Hong Kong, but also inspired the community with their perseverance and never-give-up sportsmanship. Their outstanding performance has earned the admiration and pride of the entire Hong Kong community.”
Mr Lee stressed that the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government has always attached great importance to sports development for persons with disabilities, helping them to realise their potential and pursue their dreams. Through the Hong Kong Sports Institute, the Government provides full-time high-level training for elite athletes with disabilities. This allows them to receive professional coaching, with access to barrier-free world-class training venues and equipment, and comprehensive support in sports science and sports medicine, enabling them to represent Hong Kong, China in competitions in the Mainland and abroad.
The Chief Executive added that the Government last year raised the level of direct financial support for elite athletes with disabilities across the board, and for the first time introduced a Senior Squad funding tier. This further enhances the training pathway.
Mr Lee said Hong Kong's outstanding performance at this year's Asian Para Games demonstrates that the Government's policy direction is the right one.
"I would like to thank all the athletes, coaches, medical teams and support personnel for their tireless efforts and dedication. The Government will continue to work closely with the China Hong Kong Paralympic Committee, the Hong Kong Sports Institute and various national sports associations to devote resources to nurturing talent, helping more athletes with disabilities unleash their potential, surpass themselves and achieve new levels in future international competitions."
