Star Ferry fare hikes approved
The Chief Executive in Council approved fare increases on October 13 ranging from $0.6 to $1.8 per trip for Star Ferry’s Central-Tsim Sha Tsui and Wan Chai-Tsim Sha Tsui routes, taking effect on January 25, 2027.
Under the approved adjustments, adult weekday fares will be capped at $6 and weekend fares capped at $8.3, while the monthly ticket price will be maintained at $190. The Star Ferry Company had originally applied for increases of $0.8 to $2 per trip for the two franchised routes.
After taking into account relevant factors, the Government moderated the increase to balance passenger affordability with the operator’s financial viability. These factors include public acceptability, the company’s cost-saving efforts, and its overall service performance, which has remained satisfactory with recent upgrades such as electronic payment options.
The Government pointed out that while Star Ferry recorded marginal profits in 2024 and 2025, it continues to face severe financial pressure. Slow patronage growth, limited opportunities to cut costs, rising operational expenses and high debt interest are expected to result in losses again starting in 2026.
As a result, the Government noted that the adjustment is necessary to help the operator maintain quality services. However, it encouraged the company to actively seek out non-farebox revenue streams to protect its long-term financial health.
The legislative amendment detailing the new maximum fare caps will be tabled at the Legislative Council on October 28 for negative vetting.
