Hospital site to be released
The site of the North Lantau Hospital Hong Kong Infection Control Centre (HKICC) will be released to facilitate expansion works at AsiaWorld-Expo by the Airport Authority, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government announced today.
In accordance with the principle of making good use of facilities constructed with the support of the central government, the Hong Kong SAR Government said it will transfer facilities at the site to other suitable locations for reconfiguration and reuse.
Medical equipment, ancillary equipment, furniture and consumables will be allocated to Hospital Authority hospitals, while electrical and mechanical equipment will also be reused in hospitals and healthcare facilities locally.
The modular units of isolation wards, built using the modular integrated construction method, will serve as site offices, rest rooms for site staff and material storage rooms for works projects by the Hong Kong SAR Government and public organisations.
Expressing gratitude to the central government for its support in the HKICC’s construction during the COVID-19 epidemic, the Hong Kong SAR Government said the centre has fully served its functions since being commissioned in February 2021.
During the fifth wave of the epidemic, more than 650 patients at a time were being cared for at the centre.
As the epidemic situation subsided, the HKICC was put into standby mode in November 2023. During its entire operation period, the centre received more than 20,700 patients.
Construction works for the AsiaWorld-Expo Phase 2 project are scheduled to commence in the first quarter of next year, the Hong Kong SAR Government added.
