Students win physics, maths medals
Two teams of Hong Kong students achieved outstanding results in the 8th European Physics Olympiad (EuPhO 2024) and the 65th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO 2024) by winning four gold medals, six silver and one bronze.
The EuPhO 2024, hosted by Georgia, was held from July 15 to 19, with 256 students from 54 countries or regions taking part.
The gold medallists were Haydn Cheng from Baptist Lui Ming Choi Secondary School, Edison Fu from Queen’s College, Qiao Lok-hei from St Paul’s Co-educational College and Yeung Yeung from St Mark’s School, while Hui Pok-shing from Queen Elizabeth School took home silver.
Meanwhile, the IMO 2024 was held in the UK from July 11 to 22. Among the 609 participating students from 108 countries or regions, the Hong Kong team won five silver medals and one bronze medal.
The silver medal went to Sebastian Chase from St Joan of Arc Secondary School, Kwan Yung-ho from Diocesan Boys’ School, Lai Wai-lok and Ng Hok-lai from St Paul’s Co-educational College and Jerry Xu from Victoria Shanghai Academy, while Lincoln Liu from Sha Tin College bagged a bronze medal.
Secretary for Education Choi Yuk-lin congratulated the Hong Kong teams on their outstanding performance.
Ms Choi said: “The students representing Hong Kong in the competitions have excellent potential in physics and mathematics. They have actively participated in the advanced training and achieved impressive results.”
The Education Bureau and different stakeholders will continue to promote science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) education in primary and secondary schools, and encourage the setting up of school-based talent pools to identify and nurture more STEAM talent and help them unleash their potential, she added.
