Sports body's remarks unacceptable

May 10, 2024

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government today said remarks by Hong Kong, China Weightlifting & Powerlifting Association Chairperson Ip Wing-yuk in a speech at a sports event give rise to a suspected violation of the one-China principle.

In her opening speech on May 6 at the Asian Equipped Powerlifting Championship & Asian University Cup 2024, she mentioned that "13 countries participated in" the event.

The statement is grossly inconsistent with the fact that delegations from Hong Kong, China and Chinese Taipei participated as regional teams, and gives rise to a suspected violation of the one-China principle, the Hong Kong SAR Government noted.

It also expressed concern over a series of mistakes of various gravity made by the association and requested the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China (SF&OC) to conduct an in-depth investigation and submit an effective plan of improvement.

The association has been requested to submit a report to the SF&OC by May 15.
