Golden Week visitor numbers up

May 6, 2024

Around 766,000 Mainland visitors came to Hong Kong during the Mainland's Labour Day Golden Week, which ended yesterday. The Government said the figure was is in line with its earlier estimate.

The visitors came to the city through sea, land and air control points. The daily average number of Mainland visitors was around 153,000, exceeding that of the 2023 Labour Day Golden Week by 22%.

The arrivals peaked on May 2, when about 192,000 Mainland visitors arrived. The Express Rail Link West Kowloon control point received the highest daily average number of Mainland visitors, followed by the Lok Ma Chau Spur Line control point.

A marine pyrotechnic display held off the Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade on May 1 attracted visitors and members of the public to watch on both sides of Victoria Harbour. The Yau Tsim Mong Shopping Festival kicked off on the same day, helping to boost retail sales.

A large number of visitors went to major tourist attractions such as Hong Kong Disneyland, Ocean Park, Ngong Ping 360, the Peak Tram and the West Kowloon Cultural District during the Labour Day Golden Week.

Around 570 Mainland inbound tour groups, comprising around 19,000, visited the city during this period. The groups accounted for 2.4% of the overall number of Mainland visitors. The overall hotel occupancy rate, meanwhile, exceeded 85%.

Secretary for Culture, Sports & Tourism Kevin Yeung thanked relevant government departments, organisations and trade sectors for their efforts in crowd management, which he said helped to showcase Hong Kong's hospitality.

Mr Yeung said that while the Golden Week was affected by rain most of the time, the number of Mainland visitors matched the Government's initial estimate and brought the city's economy more than $2 billion in consumption returns.

I am glad that the marine pyrotechnic display was held smoothly on May 1, creating vibrant vibes,” he added. “To welcome visitors, the Government will review its work to facilitate future communication and co-ordination as well as enhancing visitors' experience.”
