Secretary for Education Choi Yuk-lin visited Frankfurt, Germany on April 21 and 22 to learn about developments in vocational and professional education and training (VPET) there.

Ms Choi toured the Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences, one of the largest universities of applied sciences (UASs) in Germany, and exchanged views with its President Prof Arnd Steinmetz on VPET developments.

She also learned about how the university ensures its programmes keep pace with the manpower needs of industries and gain recognition from enterprises.

She said the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government promotes VPET by fostering industry-institution collaboration and diversified development under a multipronged approach, which includes establishing UASs.

Highlighting that the Metropolitan University last month became the first UAS in Hong Kong, Ms Choi said the Hong Kong SAR Government has also launched a $100 million start-up fund to support an alliance of UASs in the city that will carry out joint promotion efforts, including collaboration with leading UASs overseas.

The education chief then met Brigitte Scheuerle, Managing Director, Training & Further Education of the Vocational Training Committee of the Frankfurt am Main Chamber of Commerce & Industry. She learned about how the chamber, one of such institutions in Germany, promotes VPET and relevant education work.

Ms Choi also met young Hongkongers working in Germany to learn about their life there and update them on the latest developments in the city.
