Jobless rate rises to 3%

April 18, 2024

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased 0.1 percentage points to 3% for the period between January and March 2024, compared with December 2023 to February 2024, the Census & Statistics Department announced today.

The underemployment rate also edged up 0.1 percentage points to 1.1%.

Total employment decreased by around 6,300 to 3,688,400, while the labour force rose by around 3,100 to 3,800,100.

The number of unemployed people increased by around 9,400 to 111,700, while the number of underemployed people rose by about 2,400 to 40,000.

Noting that the unemployment rates of most sectors climbed but stayed low in general, Secretary for Labour & Welfare Chris Sun said the labour market will likely remain tight in the near term as the economy continues to grow.
