Aviation sector can import 2,982 staff

April 11, 2024

The Transport & Logistics Bureau today issued letters to inform applicants about the results of the second round of applications to the Labour Importation Scheme for the Transport Sector - Aviation Industry.

The bureau said that during the application period a total of 27 eligible companies submitted applications, involving requests to import 3,035 workers across all 10 job types under the scheme. Among these, 2,982 were approved.

Of those applications which were not approved in full, the bureau explained that they failed to meet one of the scheme’s basic requirements. This meant either that the jobs identified did not fall into one of the 10 specified job types, the numbers applied for breached the ratio requirement of full-time local staff to imported workers, or the applicant failed to conduct local recruitment first.

Separately, the Airport Authority will implement the Transport Subsidy Scheme for Local Frontline Airport Staff starting from May, with a monthly budget of about $5 million.

The bureau said that it and the authority will continue to hold regular meetings with the stakeholder consultative group to listen to the views of stakeholders on the scheme. This includes meeting representatives of the group’s labour unions this morning to discuss the approval results and details of the transport subsidy scheme.

They will also continue to enhance the dissemination of information through the consultative group to facilitate the smooth implementation and execution of the scheme.

A total of 2,841 workers were approved for importation under the first round of the scheme last August. So far, more than 1,300 imported workers have arrived to work in Hong Kong, the bureau added.

The third round of applications under the scheme will be announced in due course.
