Chief Executive John Lee today welcomed the central government’s appointment of Cui Jianchun as Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

With the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Hong Kong SAR, Mr Lee said that Hong Kong has been developing its external affairs in accordance with the Basic Law to foster its external exchanges and co-operation, enhancing its international impact and competitiveness.

The office has also rendered consular protection and appropriate assistance to Hong Kong citizens in distress overseas.

In addition, with the strong support of the central government and the office’s assistance, a number of young Hong Kong public officers have worked in the United Nations as Chinese personnel in recent years to give their best in the international arena, contributing to the development of the country and Hong Kong, and telling good stories of Hong Kong to the world.

Apart from noting that Mr Cui, as a veteran diplomat, has significant experience in overseas assignments, the Chief Executive stressed that under Mr Cui’s leadership, he firmly believes the office will continue to work closely with the Hong Kong SAR Government in taking forward different areas of work.

The Hong Kong SAR Government will continue to dovetail with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ overall strategy, accurately explain Hong Kong’s latest developments to overseas audiences, and tell good stories of Hong Kong and “one country, two systems”, he added.
