March temperature breaks record

The Hong Kong Observatory said today that the city’s weather in March was much warmer than usual, with the monthly mean maximum temperature of 23.9 degrees Celsius ranking as equal to the sixth highest on record for March.
 

The maximum temperature in the month was 31.5 degrees Celsius, on March 24, the highest maximum temperature for March on record.
 

Under the influence of the northeast monsoon and with a broad band of clouds covering Guangdong, the weather in the city was cold and mainly cloudy on the first two days of the month. Temperatures fell to a minimum of 9.6 degrees Celsius on March 2, the lowest of the month.
 

The month was also drier than usual, with total rainfall of 21.6 mm, about 29% of the normal figure. The accumulated rainfall recorded in the first three months of the year was 32.4 mm, about 78% below the normal figure for the same period.
 

On March, under light wind conditions, Hong Kong experienced cloudy and foggy weather, with a few rain patches, such that the visibility at Waglan Island fell to around 100 metres at one point.
