The Electrical & Mechanical Services Department has requested CLP Power Hong Kong to submit a detailed report within four weeks in relation to a power supply incident that occurred today.

The incident happened in areas of Kowloon and the New Territories at around 12.28pm, and the department received a notification in relation to it from CLP Power at around 12.42pm, in accordance with the established mechanism.

According to the notification, a voltage dip was recorded in CLP Power’s 400kV overhead line power supply system connecting Yuen Long to Lai Chi Kok. No power interruption was caused by the incident.

As the voltage dip occurred in a high voltage system, a short voltage dip resulted from the incident. Nearby electricity customers may have experienced dimming or flickering in their lighting systems, while operation of some electrical installations sensitive to voltage changes, such as lifts, may have been suspended due to the activation of protection systems.

The voltage dip was preliminarily suspected to be caused by a hill fire at Shap Pat Heung, Yuen Long, affecting an overhead line tower.

The department immediately followed up with CLP Power on the incident, and deployed staff to the scene to conduct assessments. It also requested the utility company to identify the cause of the incident and submit a detailed report.

In addition, the department requested registered lift contractors to report on the situation regarding affected lifts, and send staff to affected areas to help release trapped lift passengers and reset the lifts.

The department said it will continue to maintain close contact with CLP Power and urge the company to conduct appropriate follow-up work.
