HK population up 0.4%

February 20, 2024

Hong Kong’s population was 7,503,100 at the end of 2023, up 0.4% from end-2022, the Census & Statistics Department announced today.

The population increase was mainly attributable to a net inflow of 51,700 Hong Kong residents during the period, with an inflow of 40,800 one-way permit holders and a net inflow of 10,800 other Hong Kong residents.

There were 33,200 births and 54,400 deaths, resulting in a natural population decrease of 21,200.

The Government pointed out that the population registered an increase for the second consecutive year since normalcy resumed in Hong Kong, stating that many residents who stayed abroad during the epidemic returned to the city throughout 2023.

Apart from the considerable inflow of Hong Kong permanent residents in the second half of 2023, the Government explained that the increase in the year-end population for 2023 could also be traced back to the successive admission of Mainland overseas people through various schemes.

The number of usual residents was 7,228,600, while there were 274,500 mobile residents.
