Aberdeen Tunnel to use HKeToll

December 19, 2023

HKeToll will be implemented at the Aberdeen Tunnel from 5am on December 24, with the system replacing all manual toll booths and Autotoll lanes, the Transport Department announced today.

As such, motorists can drive through the toll plaza and pay tunnel tolls using toll tags without having to stop or queue at toll booths.

To facilitate implementation of the service, temporary traffic arrangements will be in force in the vicinity of the tunnel on December 24, in phases starting from 1am.

Both directions of the tunnel and its slip roads will be closed from 4am to 5am. During the closure, overnight franchised bus routes N72, N90, N170 and N171 will be diverted via Nam Fung Road, Deep Water Bay Road, Wong Nai Chung Gap Road and the vicinity of Happy Valley. At the same time, three Hong Kong Island overnight green minibus routes - N4A, N4C and N40, will be diverted via Nam Fung Road, Deep Water Bay Road, Wong Nai Chung Gap Road and Stubbs Road.

As of yesterday, more than 810,000 HKeToll vehicle tags had been issued, accounting for over 99% of licensed vehicles in Hong Kong, with about 92% of vehicle owners having opened HKeToll accounts. On average, HKeToll collects tolls of about 510,000 vehicle trips per day at the Tsing Sha Control Area, Shing Mun Tunnels, Lion Rock Tunnel, three road harbour crossings and Tate’s Cairn Tunnel.

The department reminds vehicle owners that they must settle outstanding tolls within 14 business days after passing through the tunnels. Late payments will be subject to a surcharge of $175. The maximum penalty for evading tolls is a fine of $5,000 per trip in addition to the vehicle licence not being renewed.

Users can log in to the HKeToll website or mobile app to check and pay tolls.
