Firms fined for breaching labour laws

November 15, 2023

Two companies were fined $132,000 and $220,000 respectively today for contravening labour ordinances with respect to two accidents that occurred in connection with a July 2022 concert at the Hong Kong Coliseum in Hung Hom.

During a concert rehearsal at the Hong Kong Coliseum on July 25 last year, a dancer fell off the stage and was injured. Three days later, two dancers were hit and injured by a display panel that fell during the concert's stage performance.

Following the two accidents, the Labour Department launched the prosecutions against Studiodanz Company for violating the Occupational Safety & Health Ordinance (OSHO) and the Employees' Compensation Ordinance, and Engineering Impact for breaching the OSHO.

At the Kowloon City Magistrates' Courts today, Studiodanz Company was fined $132,000 and Engineering Impact received a fine of $220,000.

The department said it hopes the judgment will send a message to duty holders that they have to protect employees' occupational safety, give notice of any accident to the Commissioner for Labour and take out employees' compensation insurance policies for their staff in accordance with the law.

The department stressed that it does not tolerate such offences and spares no effort in prosecuting employers and occupiers of premises who defy the law.
