HKeToll coming to Tate's Cairn Tunnel

November 15, 2023

HKeToll will be implemented at the Tate’s Cairn Tunnel from 5am on November 26, with the system replacing all manual toll booths and Autotoll lanes, the Transport Department announced today.

Motorists will be able to drive through the toll plaza and pay tunnel tolls via HKeToll without having to stop or queue at toll booths.

To facilitate implementation of the service, temporary traffic arrangements will be in force in the vicinity of the tunnel on November 26, in phases starting from 1am.

Both directions of the tunnel, and its slip roads, will be closed from 4am to 5am, during which time the overnight franchised bus route No. 680 will be diverted via the Lion Rock Tunnel.

As of yesterday, more than 810,000 HKeToll vehicle tags had been issued, accounting for over 99% of licensed vehicles in Hong Kong, with about 92% of vehicle owners having opened HKeToll accounts.

The department urged vehicle owners who haven’t done so to install a vehicle tag, open an HKeToll account and set up automatic payment as soon as possible, in order to fully partake of the system’s convenience.

HKeToll collects tolls from a total of about 430,000 vehicle trips per day on average at the Tsing Sha Control Area, the Shing Mun Tunnels, the Lion Rock Tunnel and the three road harbour crossings. The Government also plans to implement HKeToll at the Aberdeen Tunnel in December.
