Secretary for Innovation, Technology & Industry Prof Sun Dong today shared Hong Kong’s latest progress in promoting the development of innovation and technology (I&T) and the digital economy at an Internet forum in Zhejiang.

He gave a speech at the Cross-Strait, Hong Kong & Macau Internet Development Forum of the 2023 World Internet Conference Wuzhen Summit.

Prof Sun told his audience that the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government will set up the Digital Policy Office to drive digital-based development and actively participate in the development planning of the Digital China initiative.

To achieve its goal, the office will formulate policies on digital government, data governance and information technology.

Prof Sun said the New Industrialisation Development Office and the $10 billion New Industrialisation Acceleration Scheme will also be set up to promote the development of the digital economy.

Moreover, the Hong Kong SAR Government will proactively prepare the establishment of the Hong Kong Microelectronics Research & Development Institute next year to lead and facilitate collaboration among universities, R&D centres and the industry.

Prof Sun emphasised that the institute will fully leverage the Greater Bay Area’s well-developed manufacturing supply chains and enormous market.

The I&T chief also met Deputy Director of the Central Cyberspace Affairs Commission Office Wang Song, who is also Deputy Director of the Cyberspace Administration of China.

Prof Sun briefed Mr Wang on the relevant work progress since the signing of the memorandum of understanding on facilitating cross-boundary data flow within the bay area in June this year.

He also talked about the strategies to promote the development of I&T and the digital economy outlined in the Policy Address.

Prof Sun concluded his visit to Zhejiang this afternoon.
