Northern Link rail scheme gazetted
The Government today gazetted the Northern Link Main Line (NOL) railway scheme. Construction works will commence after the scheme is authorised and are expected to be completed by 2034.
The scheme involves constructing a railway link approximately 10.7km long connecting the Tuen Ma Line’s existing Kam Sheung Road Station and the East Rail Line’s planned Kwu Tung Station, with three intermediate stations at Au Tau, Ngau Tam Mei and San Tin.
Noting that the NOL is the main transportation backbone of the Northern Metropolis, the Government said the project will not only improve existing railway connections and serve the Kwu Tung North New Development Area and the San Tin Technopole, but will also unleash the development potential of land around Au Tau, Ngau Tam Mei and San Tin.
The Government pointed out that currently the road journey between Kam Sheung Road Station and the area of Kwu Tung Station takes about 60 to 80 minutes during rush hours, adding that upon the commissioning of the NOL Main Line, the expected travel time required for the same journey by rail will be approximately 12 minutes.
The Government and the Mass Transit Railway Corporation have consulted on the project with the North District Council and the Yuen Long District Council, exchanged views with relevant rural committees and stakeholders, and held various publicity activities.
From today until December 5, members of the public may lodge objections to the proposed scheme. Those who have a compensable interest can claim compensation under the Railways Ordinance.
Information on the scheme and relevant plans are available on the Highways Department’s website.
