To encourage food outlets and the general public to reduce waste at source and build a “plastic-and-disposable-free” culture, the Environmental Protection Department and the Environmental Campaign Committee launched the Bring Your Own Containers (BYOC) Eateries Scheme today.

Participating eateries are required to let customers use their own containers when ordering takeaways, or lend them reusable containers. For easy identification and to acknowledge their contribution towards environmental protection, the eateries will be given BYOC Eateries stickers to display.

Sponsored by the Environment & Conservation Fund, the scheme will be accepting applications year-round. Over 250 eateries have joined it already, with some offering instant discounts to patrons who bring their own containers.

The department called for the food and beverage industry to support the scheme, saying that it will not only help operators reduce costs but also allow them to contribute to environmental protection and carbon reduction efforts.

The department added that it hopes the scheme will encourage people to acquire the habit of bringing their own containers or borrowing reusable ones when ordering takeaways, and in doing so help Hong Kong as it strives towards carbon neutrality by 2050.
