Meteorological hub in development
Chief Secretary Chan Kwok-ki today officiated at a launch ceremony for the commissioning of the Greater Bay Area Meteorological Monitoring & Warning Center (Hong Kong).
The ceremony, held at the Hong Kong Observatory, marked the commencement of preparation work for the centre, which will serve to foster the development of high-quality meteorological services in the Greater Bay Area (GBA).
Also officiating at the ceremony were Administrator of the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) Chen Zhenlin and other officials from Guangdong’s, Hong Kong’s and Macau’s meteorological services.
Addressing the ceremony, Mr Chan said the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government is planning to establish in the city a supersite for the GBA air quality and meteorological monitoring where the Hong Kong center is located and in close proximity to the Northern Metropolis.
He added that this will help attract excellent meteorological talent to the bay area and further promote scientific research co-operation.
A joint project involving Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau, the centre is a work item under the GBA Meteorological Development Plan (2020-2035), as promulgated by the CMA.
It aims to develop enhanced meteorological monitoring, forecasting and warning services for the GBA through meteorological data sharing, scientific research and innovation, and to support the development of talent in the field.
