Legal delegation to visit bay area

September 6, 2023

Deputy Secretary for Justice Cheung Kwok-kwan will lead a 39-person delegation tomorrow on a visit to Huizhou and Shenzhen.

Mr Cheung and the delegates will visit a relevant court, various law-related authorities, strategic enterprises and a start-up incubation base for youth and other organisations in the two Mainland cities of the Greater Bay Area.

The group seeks to better understand the latest developments of the Mainland's legal system, the impact of innovation and technology on legal services, the specific needs for legal services in the bay area and other related subjects.

The delegates comprise young legal practitioners in the private sector and the Department of Justice (DoJ), and law students from Hong Kong’s three law schools.

It is the first time the department organised such a dedicated delegation to visit the bay area's Mainland cities as well as the first trip of DoJ Fellows, the department’s in-house alliance of young government counsel.

Mr Cheung said the purpose of the visit is to encourage young Hong Kong lawyers to have a deeper understanding of the bay area’s latest developments.

He added that he hopes they can better leverage on their strengths and enhance collaboration with their Mainland counterparts with the aim of contributing to the country’s latest rule of law developments.

The group will return to Hong Kong on September 9.
