Energy scheme covers more products

September 1, 2023

With effect from today, the fourth phase of the Mandatory Energy Efficiency Labelling Scheme will cover LED lamps, gas cookers and gas instantaneous water heaters, the Electrical & Mechanical Services Department has announced.

The arrangement will be fully implemented on December 1 next year, after a 15-month transitional period.

The department said the inclusion of these three types of products in the scheme may save around 160 million kilowatt-hours annually, equivalent to eliminating about 75,000 tonnes of carbon emissions per year.

It added that, together with the eight types of products covered in the first three phases, the energy consumption in the residential sector covered by the scheme will substantially increase from about 50% to about 80% of the total.

The 2023 edition of the Code of Practice on Energy Labelling of Products also took effect today.

The labels classify energy performance into five grades. Products with a Grade 1 energy label are the most energy-efficient.
