Mid-year population at 7.49m

August 15, 2023

Hong Kong’s population was 7,498,100 in the middle of the year, up 2.1% from mid-2022, the Census & Statistics Department announced today.

The population increase was mainly attributable to a net inflow of 174,000 Hong Kong residents during the period, with an inflow of 31,000 one-way permit holders and a net inflow of 143,000 other Hong Kong residents.

There were 32,600 births and 54,600 deaths, resulting in a natural population decrease of 22,000.

The Government said that with the gradual relaxation of anti-epidemic control measures since the second half of 2022, normal travel between Hong Kong and the Mainland and other parts of the world has progressively resumed.

As many Hong Kong residents who stayed abroad during the COVID-19 epidemic returned to Hong Kong and some Mainland and overseas people were admitted to the city through various schemes, a large net inflow of Hong Kong residents was recorded in the first half of 2023, it added.

The number of usual residents was 7,249,300, while there were 248,700 mobile residents.
