Acting Secretary for Health Dr Libby Lee (fifth right) presents awards to outstanding blood donors.

Acting Secretary for Health Dr Libby Lee today attended the Hong Kong Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service’s Annual Donor Award Ceremony to commend outstanding blood donors.

The service also announced that a record high of 3,855 donors gave blood 25-times or in its multiples in 2022-23.

Speaking at the ceremony, Dr Lee pointed out that there is no substitute for blood and its shelf life is limited.

The service needs regular blood donations by the public in order to ensure a sufficient and stable blood supply for the city.

Dr Lee said she hoped the spirit of mutual support and care would spread across society, adding that the Government would continue to give its full support to blood donation.

The service thanked all donors for their enthusiasm in contributing to a sustainable blood supply for the city. This year, 123,823 donors came forward and donated 210,532 units of blood, turning into over 330,000 units of blood products for clinical treatment.

In addition to individual donation awards, Elite Partnership Awards were presented to corporate, community and academic partners in recognition of their enthusiastic support for blood donation.
