Bun Festival Grand Parade returns

May 26, 2023

The Cheung Chau Bun Festival Grand Parade resumed after a three-year hiatus today, attracting thousands of people to the island.

The festival, organised by the Hong Kong Cheung Chau Bun Festival Committee, is listed on the national list of intangible cultural heritage and dates back to a traditional Qing dynasty ritual to expel bad spirits.

Its Grand Parade, launched at a ceremony officiated by Secretary for Home & Youth Affairs Alice Mak, then set off from Pak Tai Temple Playground and wound its way through the various alleyways before returning to the playground.

Children balancing on poles and dressed in colourful costumes were paraded around the island.

The festival culminated with the Bun Scrambling Competition, with 12 finalists climbing a tower to snatch as many buns as possible.
