Secretary for Environment & Ecology Tse Chin-wan today attended the Third Belt & Road Energy Partnership Forum in Xiamen to discuss issues including safeguarding energy security and promoting green energy.

In his speech, Mr Tse highlighted the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government's decarbonisation strategies to achieve carbon neutrality before 2050 to align with the national "dual carbon" targets.

Noting that electricity generation is the largest source of carbon emissions in Hong Kong, he said that through strengthening regional co-operation, the city strives to increase the use of zero-carbon energy in electricity generation by raising its share in the fuel mix to around 60-70% before 2035.

The environment chief also outlined the contribution of the two power companies in Hong Kong in the development of the electricity industry in the nation and Belt & Road countries.

He said the two companies are endeavouring to develop clean energy and promote low-carbon transformation, which provides opportunities for the exchange of technology and experience for energy management talent.

Mr Tse also visited an exhibition at the forum that showcases the achievements of Belt & Road energy co-operation projects over the past decade.
