Care worker import scheme to launch

May 18, 2023

In preparation for the Special Scheme to Import Care Workers for Residential Care Homes to be launched on June 19, the Social Welfare Department today said two online briefing sessions for the residential care home (RCH) sector will be held to explain the application details.

To meet the additional manpower requirements in the next few years, assist the RCH sector in enhancing service quality, and alleviate the acute shortage of care workers, the Government earlier announced the introduction of the special scheme in the second quarter of this year. On the premise of safeguarding the employment priority for local workers, the scheme will allow RCHs for the elderly, RCHs for people with disabilities and nursing homes to import care workers on an appropriate scale.

The application details will be uploaded to the department's webpage later.

It also noted that upon launching the special scheme, quota applications to import care workers by all RCHs for the elderly, RCHs for people with disabilities and nursing homes will be processed under the scheme. The Supplementary Labour Scheme run by the Labour Department will no longer accept applications for the importation of care workers from the RCHs.
