Volunteers assist in separating and collecting flowers at the showground of the Hong Kong Flower Show for waste reduction.

The Leisure & Cultural Services Department held the two-day Green Recycling Day activities for the Hong Kong Flower Show from today.

More than 350 volunteers assisted in separating and collecting reusable and recyclable materials at the showground for waste reduction.

Landscape displays suitable for reuse and flowers suitable for replanting were relocated to the parks and amenity areas.

Some of the flowers suitable for replanting were also distributed to schools, environmental groups and non-governmental organisations. Over 10,000 potted plants were distributed to some 60 organisations.

In addition, around 3,000 pots of flowers were distributed to the public today.

The department has implemented various green measures at different stages of the flower show, encouraging all stakeholders including exhibitors, contractors, volunteers and members of the public to apply the 3R principles - Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

QR codes were displayed at the showground for visitors to access relevant information on the floor plan, the programme of activities and the major attractions of the flower show to reduce waste. In addition, recyclables collection points were set up.

Collected wilted flowers will be delivered to the Animal Waste Composting Plant in Ngau Tam Mei for recycling into organic compost.
