Secretary for Home & Youth Affairs Alice Mak today attended the Basic Law Quiz Competition Final & Prize Presentation Ceremony.
Jointly organised by the Home & Youth Affairs Bureau, the Committee on the Promotion of Civic Education and the Working Group on Local Community under the Constitution & Basic Law Promotion Steering Committee, this year's contest received an overwhelming response, attracting a record number of over 32,000 participants.
Speaking at the ceremony, Miss Mak said the National People’s Congress passed a Decision in 2020 and 2021 respectively, authorising its Standing Committee to establish the National Security Law and amend Annex I and Annex II to the Basic Law.
The decision safeguarded national security and improved the electoral system, implemented “patriots administering Hong Kong” and achieved a major transition from chaos to order, she noted.
Miss Mak added that it is now the pivotal moment of Hong Kong’s new journey on advancing from stability to prosperity. Bureaus and departments of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government have been dedicated to enhancing public understanding of the Constitution, the Basic Law and the National Security Law.
The quiz competition covered the relationship between the Constitution and the Basic Law, the Basic Law and its history and the National Security Law.
It comprised the Family, Senior Primary School, Secondary School and Open categories. To tie in with the contest, the organisers hosted two seminars to introduce to secondary school teachers and students the Constitution and the Basic Law.
