March 7, 2023

A total of 409 HIV infection cases were reported last year, compared with 447 in 2021, the Centre for Health Protection announced today.

The centre said sexual transmission remained the major mode of HIV transmission and advised the public to use condoms consistently and properly to reduce the infection risk.

Of last year’s HIV cases, 341 were males and 68 were females.

Among them, 214 involved homosexual or bisexual contact, 102 were via heterosexual contact, two were through drug injection and one was related to blood or blood product transfusion outside the city, while the remaining 90 cases have yet to be determined.

The fourth quarter of last year saw 102 new HIV cases, taking the cumulative total of infection cases to 11,641 since 1984.

Of these cases, 47 were attributed to homosexual or bisexual contact, 30 were related to heterosexual contact and the remaining 25 cases have yet to be determined.

Since 1985, a cumulative total of 2,382 confirmed AIDS cases have been reported in Hong Kong.
