Netizens' rumour condemned

August 14, 2022

The Immigration Department today condemned netizens for spreading fake news, adding that it will take resolute follow-up action.

It said some netizens recently spread fake news and a photo claiming that people who have made a declaration of permanent departure from Hong Kong for early withdrawal of their Mandatory Provident Fund (MPF) would receive an envelope issued by the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority, which requires them to hand over the envelope to Immigration Department staff upon their departure from Hong Kong according to the instruction stamped.

The department stated that there is no such arrangement with the authority and the rumour is groundless and fictitious.

It also pointed out that the envelope with a MPF promotional slogan printed on the top left corner as shown in the photo is a standardised envelope uniformly printed by the Government Logistics Department for all government bureaus and departments.

The department condemned the ill-intentioned parties who intend to cause chaos by making use of the photo to disseminate false and untrue information.
