Dancers' status being ascertained

August 6, 2022

Secretary for Labour & Welfare Chris Sun today said the Labour Department is helping to ascertain whether the dancers involved in a recent serious incident at the Hong Kong Coliseum are self-employed.

He told a media session that the department is in the process of seeking information from the companies concerned and also liaising with the dancers.

Mr Sun stressed that their employment status would depend on the facts, rather than the kind of documents signed.

“We hope that with our mediation, they will be able to determine later on whether or not these dancers are self-employed or (if) they are indeed employees. It depends on the facts.

“Ultimately, if they cannot reach a consensus on their status, eventually it has to be determined by the court; but we hope, with our help and assistance, we will be able to find out exactly what their status is, ie they are employees or self-employed.”
