'One country, two systems' successful

July 1, 2022

President Xi Jinping today said the implementation of "one country, two systems" in Hong Kong has achieved accomplishments recognised worldwide, adding that the principle must be upheld and there is no reason to change it.

President Xi made the remarks at a meeting celebrating the 25th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to the motherland and the inaugural ceremony of the sixth-term Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government.

He pointed out that the underlying goal of the "one country, two systems" principle is to safeguard national sovereignty, security and development interests and maintain Hong Kong and Macau's long-term prosperity and stability.

It is a must for Hong Kong to fully and faithfully uphold "one country, two systems" so as to ensure its steadfast and successful implementation, he said.

President Xi also emphasised that Hong Kong should ensure the exercise of overall jurisdiction by the central government, the high degree of autonomy and "patriots administering Hong Kong", in addition to maintaining its unique status and advantages.

Noting that Hong Kong will be facing both opportunities and challenges in the coming five years, the President expressed hopes for the new-term Government and the community to enhance governance efficiency, strengthen the momentum of development, address difficulties in people's lives and maintain harmony and stability.

He believes that Hong Kong will create a brighter future under the country's support and the robust safeguard provided by "one country, two systems".
