John Lee meets lawmakers

May 20, 2022

Chief Executive-elect John Lee today met Legislative Council members to listen to their views on the new-term Government and called for their support for the proposed reorganisation of the government structure.

In the course of two sessions, Mr Lee met legislators from the Hong Kong Federation of Trade Unions during the first one and those from the Federation of Hong Kong & Kowloon Labour Unions, the Third Side as well as some others in the second one.

They discussed matters including fighting the COVID-19 epidemic, the resumption of normal travel, economic development, employment, assistance to the unemployed, land and housing and youth development.

Mr Lee stressed that the reorganisation of bureaus would allow individual bureaus to handle issues of public concern in a more focused and detailed manner and generate a synergy effect.

He also emphasised that the creation of three deputy secretaries of departments will help to strengthen governance and co-ordination capabilities, facilitate cross-bureau and cross-department collaboration and enhance governance efficiency.

The Chief Executive-elect appealed to all LegCo members to support the reorganisation proposal and expressed the hope that the relevant legislative and funding procedures could be completed by mid-June so that the new government structure could take effect on July 1.

Representatives of the Office of the Chief Executive-elect will continue to attend meetings to address legislators’ questions and comments, he added.
