Original ID required for voting

December 15, 2021

The Electoral Affairs Commission today clarified that electors are only required to bring their original Hong Kong identity (HKID) card in order to cast their votes in the 2021 Legislative Council General Election.

The commission made the clarification regarding a wrong quote in media reports concerning its chairman Barnabas Fung.

Mr Fung was wrongly quoted as saying that electors must bring the poll card to vote on election day.

The commission reiterated that on the polling day, eligible electors only need to present their HKID card to the polling staff for verification and issuing ballot papers.

The poll card only aims to notify electors of the name and address of the polling station assigned to them and other related information.

For electors who have lost their HKID card to collect their ballot papers, they may produce a memo of lost property issued by Police, together with the original of a valid passport or similar travel document showing their name and photograph.
