New rules for driving instructors set

December 1, 2021

The Transport Department today announced that applications for the Private Driving Instructor (PDI) identity plate are now open.

The department noted that the Road Traffic (Driving Licences) (Amendment) Regulation 2021 has come into effect and it will roll out the PDI identity plate in accordance with the regulation.

From March 4, 2022, all PDIs are required to display the identity plate inside the training vehicle when giving driving instruction.

The introduction of the PDI identity plate aims to help improve the instructor's professional image, deter illegal driving training and safeguard the interest of both PDIs and learner drivers, the department said.

The PDI identity plate will show the PDIs full name, a recent photograph, the class of motor vehicles in respect of which the PDI is entitled to give driving instruction and the issue and expiry dates.

The issue of the PDI identity plate and plate holder is free of charge.

The department has provided a letter to all PDIs informing them of the relevant arrangement and appealed for their early application.

The department will gazette the requirement on March 4, 2022.
