Followed by her first bronze in the Women's Keirin event at the London 2012 Olympic Games, cyclist Lee Wai-sze today grabbed an Olympic bronze in the Women's Sprint, bringing the medal tally up to six for Hong Kong at this Tokyo Olympics.

Chief Executive Carrie Lam extended her greatest congratulations to her as Ms. Lee is the first Hong Kong athlete who has won medals at two Olympic Games.

“She has demonstrated that her competence and determination have passed the test of time, and she has become a Hong Kong legend with her brilliant results.”

Mrs Lam noted that the success of Ms Lee and the cycling team has provided insights into the direction of sports development and training of elite athletes.

She noted that the Hong Kong Velodrome has provided Hong Kong cycling athletes with a top-notch competition and training venue in recent years. The cycling team has also collaborated with a local university to leverage scientific research achievements to enhance the performance of athletes.

The Government will attach more importance to the allocation of resources in these areas, Mrs Lam added.

Ms Lee is the first Hong Kong world champion in womens' cycling competitions. As a full-time athlete since 2004, she has brought Hong Kong honour in the international sporting arena with outstanding results, including gold medals in various competitions of the Asian Games in 2010, 2014 and 2018 as well as clinching gold at the World Championships in 2013 and 2019.

Secretary for Home Affairs Caspar Tsui also lauded Ms Lee’s excellent achievements in Olympic Games, bringing so much joy and surprises to the sports sector in Hong Kong.

He said that she has become a role model for Hong Kong athletes.

Mr Tsui also thanked Head Coach Shen Jinkang and his team for their great contribution to the cycling team.
